The path to
Reparations
Acknowledge
The Repair Campaign calls for governments, institutions and individuals to acknowledge their role in the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans and the colonial legacies that followed.
The first step towards justice is to acknowledge the enduring trauma associated with the history of enslavement and exploitation in the Caribbean.
Amplify
Repair’s Rapporteur team visited all 15 CARICOM countries and spoke with over 280 people from government parties, opposition leaders and civil organisations including Indigenous communities, Rastafari groups, youth groups, women’s organisations and church leaders, among others.
The conversations highlighted the ongoing impact of colonialism and our goal is to amplify these voices, experiences and calls for justice. We hope to build a network that inspires meaningful impact and facilitates economic, social and psychological healing.
Action
A research team working under the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at the University of the West Indies (UWI) have analysed, researched and identified key areas for financial reparation, guided by the CARICOM Ten Point Plan for Reparatory Justice.
The Repair Campaign using this evidence and research, will produce Socioeconomic Reparatory Justice Plans which will serve as a long-term reparatory roadmap and lobbying tool.

The Origins of
The Repair Campaign
Having spent over two decades in the Caribbean working with various organisations, I’ve come to understand how the legacy of chattel slavery and colonialism continues to inflict damage on the people and the landscape of the Caribbean. I have seen and heard how present-day issues such as public health crises, for example diabetes and hypertension, lack of access to education and generational trauma are directly linked to former colonial powers over-exploiting and significantly depleting Caribbean countries.
Moved and humbled by these stories, I feel strongly about supporting the CARICOM Reparations Commission’s call for reparatory justice. We aim to amplify this work that has been done by Caribbean groups over many generations.
This has included Rapporteur teams visiting all 15 CARICOM countries meeting with various government ministers, opposition leaders, civil society organisations and more. Informed by these experiences, The Repair Campaign team and I believe socioeconomic reparatory justice is a matter of urgency and echo the calls to combine regional development with reparations to heal and prosper socially, psychologically and economically. Together with the University of West Indies, and under the guidance of Sir Hilary Beckles, we aim to deliver country-specific plans detailing areas intended for socioeconomic reparatory justice.
