CARICOM Leaders Address Reparations at 50th Heads of Government Meeting in St. Kitts and Nevis
CARICOM leaders convened in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis for the 50th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), where reparations for the transatlantic slave trade was a key discussion item.
Heads of Government requested that the Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee (PMSC) on Reparations review and advise on the revised “CARICOM Ten-Point Plan for Reparations: A Manifesto”, as well as on priority activities for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled for Antigua and Barbuda in November, and other strategic Meetings in 2026.
Celebrity and Political Collaboration on Reparations
Reggae legend Gramps Morgan has collaborated with the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda on a reparations project centred in the 2026 Reggae Month celebrations. Morgan emphasised the importance of reaching countries historically involved in the transatlantic slave trade – including Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, and Portugal – to advance the reparations conversation.
Regional Reparations Advocacy Continues
The Repair Campaign Community Organiser Elsie Harry hosted a series of Reparations Conversation in St. Kitts and Nevis on 7th and 10th of February, engaging grassroots stakeholders, raising awareness and building on-the-ground solidarity for ongoing reparations advocacy.
The events featured special presentations on reparations by Her Excellency, Nerys Dockery, Secretary-General of the St. Kitts-Nevis National Commission for UNESCO and Carla Astaphan, Chair of the St Kitts and Nevis National Reparations Committee.
Regional Reparations Advocacy Continues
The Repair Campaign Community Organiser Kibwe Copeland hosted a commemorative Black History Month March and Cultural Program on Friday, 27th February 2026 under the theme “Claiming our Legacy: From Apology to Reparative Justice”.
Participants marched to the historic Parade Ground – the site of the 1823 rebellion – and returned to City Hall for a cultural program featuring drumming, poetry, and keynote addresses including by His Worship the Mayor Alfred Mentore.
St. Kitts and Nevis National Reparations Committee hosts side event on reparations at CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting
The St. Kitts and Nevis National Reparations Committee convened a Reparations Forum on 27th February 2026, on the margins of the event with high level stakeholders discussing plans to strategically advance the region’s advocacy for reparatory justice.
