Note from the National Haitian Committee for Restitution and Reparations:
President Macron has taken a step in the right direction. But a very small step. A delaying step that buys time and allows for a wait-and-see approach. In reality, France shows no intention of addressing the issue of restitution in a direct and resolute manner. While there is acknowledgment of the original injustice and the need to build a better relationship between our two peoples, that is as far as it goes.
Similarly, France recognised slavery as a crime against humanity but still refuses to provide reparations for this crime.
Therefore, the struggle for the restitution of the triple ransom of Independence must be continued and it must be intensified.
The establishment of a binational, multidisciplinary commission tasked with addressing the issue of restitution in all its dimensions is truly a starting point for the reparatory justice we all seek.

Le Président Macron a fait un pas dans la bonne Direction. Mais un très petit pas. Un pas temporisateur qui permet de gagner du temps et de voir venir. En réalité, la France ne montre aucune intention d’aborder la problématique de la restitution de manière directe et résolue. Certes, il y a reconnaissance de l’injustice originelle et de la nécessité de construire une meilleure relation entre nos deux peuples mais pas plus.
De la même manière, la France a reconnu l’esclavage comme un crime contre l’humanité mais se refuse à réparer pour ce crime.
La lutte pour la restitution de la triple rançon de l’Indépendance doit donc se poursuivre et s’intensifier.
L’institution d’une commission binationale pluridisciplinaire ayant pour mission d’aborder la question de la restitution dans toutes ses dimensions est le véritable point de départ de la justice réparatoire que nous attendons tous et toutes.
