“Prime Minister Mitchell is to be applauded for calling on the EU to address the issue of reparations. Ursula von der Leyen, in her response, rightly acknowledged that slavery is a crime against humanity. Now, she needs to move beyond that acknowledgement to ensuring the institutions of the EU actively progress reparations.”
The Repair Campaign has welcomed the inclusion of reparatory justice for slavery on the agenda of the 48th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM (Caribbean Community), which takes place this week in Barbados (19th – 21st February).
The Church of England is to be commended for its commitment to slavery reparations. The
Policy Exchange think tank criticises the Church on the basis that its reparations plan may
lead other institutions – including the Government and Royal Family – to pay reparations. If
this were to be the outcome of the Church’s actions, it would be most welcome.
