This process was so horrendous that 43% of all enslaved Africans died within 3 years of their arrival at the Codrington plantations in Barbados from 1741 to 1746.⁵ Moreover, the life expectancy of an enslaved person from birth was between 20 to 29 years on average, whereas white persons in Barbados had a life expectancy of about 35 years on average, similar to that in England.⁶
