Prime Minister Holness has secured broad support across The Caribbean Community (CARICOM)’s member states, highlighting the issue during this week’s CARICOM Heads of Government meeting.

During the first week of July 2025, The Repair Campaign accompanied several prominent Caribbean public intellectuals and reparation advocates to speak with various members of parliament in the UK and EU about why reparations matter and identify allies within parliament who would support this as an important issue on the political agenda.

The Jamaican Government says it intends to petition King Charles III, in his current position as the island’s head of state, to refer questions to the UK Privy Council demanding answers as the country steps up its first for reparations for the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Culture Minister Olivia Grange, who made the disclosure, insists that Jamaica is taking its demand for reparations from the UK for the enslavement of the country’s African ancestors.

Leaders and advocates involved in the Caribbean reparations movement are in Europe this week for a series of political engagements aimed at advancing their demands for reparatory justice.

The delegation is organized by The Repair Campaign, which describes itself as “a social movement for reparatory justice in the Caribbean, guided by the CARICOM Reparations Commission.

Global campaigning for slavery reparations gathered pace this week with lobbying in Westminster and Brussels, days after the Jamaican government revealed it will ask King Charles to request legal advice on the issue.

A number of activists and researchers in the reparations movement from across the Caribbean region have hailed two successful days of constructive engagements with EU and UK political representatives on the issue of slavery reparations.
